Air travel is extremely damaging to the environment. A flight to California and back, for example, emits around 4 tonnes of CO2 per person. That amount is equivalent to heating a medium-sized apartment for an entire year. Short flights tend to be more harmful to the climate than long-haul flights. Rail travel is more climate-friendly than flying. Yet only those who holiday close to home and use public transport will substantially save in generating CO2. And those who travel by bicycle or on foot produce no CO2 at all. You can find more information here.
